Character Information

Character Name: Edward Elric
Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Canon-Point: Just after the end of Episode 49, the sun rising on the Promised Day
Age: 17
History: Wikipedia Character Entry

Personality: On first impressions, Ed comes across as a brash, impulsive, impolite teenager with a short fuse and some anger management problems. This isn't entirely inaccurate. He has a definite tendency to get into fights without considering the likely outcome--particularly if someone he cares about is at risk or someone's life is in danger. This gives the impression that he acts without thinking, and in some cases this is undoubtedly true. There are times when he's jumped in feet-first where a level head would have prevailed, often because of a simple misunderstanding or sleight against him. While his impulsiveness in a fight has gotten him into trouble, it's not strictly a good or bad trait, as it's also lead to him pulling himself or others out of a tough situation as well.

However, behind the outward face of the rude, impetuous kid is a genius intellect capable of intense focus and long-term dedication to those tasks that interest him. His study of forbidden alchemy wasn't a passing fling, but a years-long endeavor, as is his goal to restore his brother's body (and his own). He spends hours immersed in libraries, days cracking codes not meant to be deciphered, months training himself to use his prosthetics. Even in a physical fight, he has repeatedly shown the ability to think on his feet and use his intelligence to outwit those he can't outfight. He uses his intelligence to his benefit, and isn't afraid to let it shine in any situation; Ed sees no reason to play dumb for anyone, as it's ultimately his brain, not his fighting skills, that have benefited him the most in his life.

As shown by his studious nature, Edward is also capable of great dedication to a task put to him, even if the odds are against him. His primary goal in his canon, to restore the bodies he and his brother Alphonse lost in committing their taboo, is a particularly hopeless cause, the solution constantly offered to him in ways he finds morally objectionable, but he never stops searching for an acceptable answer. Similarly, he's also particularly devoted to those he cares about; his brother is the most obvious case, but he also protects and worries about his close friends and allies, doing his best to keep them out of harm's way even when they protest his efforts. While most of his compatriots are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves, Edward still tries to shoulder the burden of their protection; it's part of who he is, and not something he can change.

Beyond even his close friends and allies, Ed is a person who cares about people in general. He quickly warms up to (most) small children, finds it difficult to kill animals for food even when he himself is starving, and can't bear to see a mortal enemy killed. He hides his kind-hearted nature behind his rather abrasive outward personality, but that part of him still comes through from time to time. Unfortunately, this caring has cost him on more than one occasion, most notably when he defends the violent alchemist Kimbley from being killed. Kimbley in turn shows his appreciation by goading Ed into fighting him; he then takes advantage of Ed's hesitation to strike a fatal blow, dealing a near-fatal injury to Edward in the process.. Even after this experience, however, Edward still can't bring himself to kill even those who do not share his convictions.

Because he can be abrasive and impolite, his brother has often had to smooth things over for him in canon; prior to the canon point from which I'm taking him, however, the siblings have been separated for some time, and he's had to function without that peacemaking element. Though he's been in hiding for much of the time, his personality has calmed a bit as a result of dealing with his own consequences, though he'll still fly into a rage at seemingly insignificant things, particularly comments about his lack of height. His language tends to be more coarse than civil, but he doesn't necessarily mean to be offensive. As a child surrounded by adult peers, Edward has had to prove himself capable for years; even now as he's entering adulthood himself, he still believes he needs to put up the tough front to show he can handle what's going on around him.

In spite of his rough-around-the-edges personality, Ed is able to gather people around him who will stand by him just as he stands by them, and who will help him toward his secondary goal of saving the world, or at least his homeland. For those who can see past the coarse exterior, they could not ask for a more devoted friend and companion. They'll just have to deal with the foul language. And try to avoid implying he's short.

Abilities/Powers: Ed's primary ability is Alchemy, defined in his world as the science of understanding, decomposing, and reconstructing matter into a new form. Put simply, an alchemist can rearrange matter to any shape they choose, so long as they obey the law of conservation of mass, and don't attempt to change the properties of the matter itself (ie, changing stone to bread). These transmutations are controlled via a circular matrix, where the pattern inscribed on it aids to control and direct the alchemist's work.

Ed, however, is one of a very small set of people who doesn't require the matrix to work; instead, he's able to bring his hands together and create the circle within his body; as a result, he's capable of performing alchemy at far greater speeds than all but the very few others who, like him, have violated one of alchemy's taboos and sacrificed a part of his body in exchange for the skill.

While known as a science in the series, Ed's alchemy lies somewhere between historic alchemy and what's traditionally referred to as magic; he will insist to anyone who questions it that it's science, however, and as a science it is governed by a strict set of rules, the best known of these being the Law of Equivalent Exchange--that in order to gain something, one must give up an equal item. Alchemy cannot create something from nothing, nor can it create something from an unequal source. Edward has, unfortunately, learned the latter the hard way, in his attempt to transmute a living human, an incident which cost him two of his limbs.

Though it's not strictly a power or ability, Ed arrives in possession of two "Automail" mechanical prosthetics, replacing his right arm at the shoulder, and his left leg above the knee. He utilizes them regularly in combat, particularly the arm, which he frequently transmutes into a bladed weapon. Even without the ability to transmute the blade, he will still be able to use them as weapons themselves, simply due to their weight and their carbon/steel construction. However, as the ones he currently wears are the lighter-weight version he's given later in his canon, they will not be as sturdy as his originals, and can be damaged under heavy stress. Both limbs are connected to steel ports grafted directly to Ed's skeleton and nervous system, and while the limbs can be removed for repairs, the ports are permanently fixed in place. The power needed to move the limbs is drawn from the body of the wearer itself, not from an external source; I'm not sure how this will in turn be affected by game mechanics and am open to just about any option.

Items: At this point, Ed doesn't have much on him. He's packing light for the final battle to come, so he quite literally only has the clothes on his back: a black, loose-fitting tank top, black trousers, simple black boots, and a red coat. He also comes in with his Northern-version Automail, a lighter version with less steel and a higher carbon-fiber content, to protect against extreme temperatures.
