Name/Work Name: Edward Elric/Rich
Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Canon Point: Dawn of the Promised Day
AU/CRAU: No
Age: 17
History: Comprehensive wiki is located here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Elric
Personality: On first impression, Ed comes across as a brash, impulsive, rude teenager with a short fuse and anger management problems; that's not an entirely inaccurate impression. He tends to blow up over small things, use rough language, and get into fights over misunderstandings and minor slights. That said, he won't hesitate to get into a fight to protect someone he cares about, even if the odds are against him, often pulling himself and his friends out of tough situations.
Behind the outward appearance of a loud-mouthed kid, however, is a genius intellect capable of intense focus and dedication to those tasks that interest him. He doesn't change focus easily; his study of alchemy, and particularly human transmutation, was a years-long endeavor, as is his goal to restore his brother's body (and his own). Given a research library, he loses himself within it for hours, completely unaware of the world around him; given an unbreakable code, he cracks it in a matter of days, and given prosthetics that take years to adapt to, he masters them in a third of the normal time. Even in physical fights, he'll think on his feet and outwit an opponent he can't outfight. He doesn't play dumb, instead choosing to let his intellect shine, as it's brains, not brawn, that have gotten him furthest in life.
His dedication doesn't waver when the odds are against him, either. His primary canon goal of restoring the bodies he and his brother lost is a nearly hopeless case, with only a morally objectionable solution offered, but he presses on regardless. He's devoted to those he cares for, worrying about and protecting them. Even when they're perfectly capable of taking care of themselves, Edward still tries to shoulder the burden of their safety; it's just part of who he is.
Beyond his close friends and allies, Ed is a person who generally cares about everyone, quickly warming up to (most) children, finding it difficult to hunt animals for food, and refusing to kill mortal enemies. He hides this kind-heartedness behind his rather abrasive outward personality, but it still comes through at times, sometimes at great cost. At the worst, he nearly dies attempting to prevent the death of an enemy; yet even this doesn't change his belief that all life holds value.
His abrasiveness, a tough front put on to prove himself capable as a child surrounded by adults, is frequently smoothed over by his brother. However, at this point they've been separated for some time, leaving Edward to learn to function without Al covering for him. Between growing more mature and being forced to deal with his own actions, his personality has calmed a bit, though not so much that he won't still fly off the handle at seemingly insignificant things. In spite of his rough surface, he's able to gather people around him who'll stand by him just as he does them, and who want to help him reach his goals. For those who can see past that mask, they couldn't ask for a more devoted friend and companion. As long as they don't imply he's short.
Debt: While nothing that benefits Ed and Ed alone would make him even begin to consider something like this, if the witch promised the safety of all the people of Amestris in exchange for his labor, he would take her offer in an instant. At his current canon point, his primary concern is to protect his countrymen from the impending homunculus threat, so he can return to his original quest of restoring his and his brother's bodies; lifting that burden from his shoulders would be enough to gain his signature on the contract.
Suitability: A life of servitude isn't unfamiliar to Ed; he views his position in the military, under a leader with the best interests of the populace the farthest thing from his mind, as a form of servitude itself. As it allows him to reach his own goals, however, he has determined to suffer through being a "military dog" for as long as it takes. Similarly, with his debt to the witch, he will likewise suffer through. He certainly won't be happy about it at all, and his complaints are sure to be aired at some point, for better or for worse. But, like joining the military back home, he made this decision himself as well, and whatever comes of it, he's going to stick it out until his debts are paid.
Previous Game Info: n/a
Inventory: Clothing: black tank top, black pants, black boots, leather belt, red full-length coat. Other: Silver pocketwatch, small leatherbound notebook
Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses: Ed's primary strengths are his alchemy, martial arts, and intelligence. Having trained under a master who honed both fighting and alchemic skills, he's particularly strong and well-muscled for his age, as well as extremely agile. Able to perform transmutations unusually fast thanks to his encounter with Truth, he can utilize those skills alongside the martial arts he's learned, giving him an edge in a fight. Those skills were initially gained thanks to his keen intelligence, however, and only enhanced by Truth; he's able not only to understand academic concepts, but to reason his way through things as well.
Those strengths are countered by his short fuse and sharp temper, however; he tends to blow up over things most would view as insignificant, and is particularly sensitive to comments about his diminutive stature. Ed also resents being treated like a child, threats to his family and closest friends, and being told to drink his milk. When overcome by rage, he tends to abandon the fighting skills and reason he ordinarily uses to his advantage, giving his opponent the advantage. While he still makes use of his alchemy in the midst of his tantrums, his transmutations become less about tactic and more about brute force, easier to deflect or evade.
Edward's prosthetics can easily be both a strength and a weakness to him; he frequently utilizes them in fights, transmuting the covering into weapons and using them as shields to deflect attacks that would heavily damage a flesh-and-blood limb. However, their durability doesn't mean they're unbreakable, and when damaged, the prosthetics can't heal themselves. Any damage done to them will require a mechanic (or other intervention), and will definitely take a toll.
